League winners!!
Hitchin finished off their league campaign with a hard fought win against a team with a very organised defence.
Hitchin took a long time to get the journey to Actonians out of their system and conceded two tries in the first quarter both of which were converted. However, the forwards soon got the upper hand in the scrums and a series of penalties against Actonians resulted in the referee going between the posts for a penalty try.
From the kick off Hitchin did not get their defence set up and the Actonian’s number 8 ran through to score another try which was converted.
Hitchin responded forcing the play to within 5 metres of the Actonian’s line from which Ryan Arbon picked up from the ruck to dot down for an unconverted try to make the half time score 21 – 12 in favour of the home side.
A penalty against Actonians 10 metres from their line was taken as a scrum and after several phases Elliot Gibson went over in the corner for a try converted by Ben Wiggins.
With ten minutes to go Actonians were awarded a penalty which they kicked for a lineout on the Hitchin 5 metre line and after several phases during which they could not break the Hitchin defence, an Actonian pass was intercepted by Adam Shaw who ran the length of the pitch to score under the posts for Ben Wiggins to convert.
