1st XV 68 v 0 Gillingham Anchorians RFC - Home Cup Draw on 23 Feb 2019

Pierre sur la charge

Gillingham kicked off but Hitchin withstood their early pressure very well ,and finally Ali Southward kicked the ball out of defence and into the opposition half.

Hitchin continued to press and after 5 minutes were awarded a penalty on the opposition 22 ,which Ben Wiggins converted.

After 20 minute , a  neat kick through by Bn Wiggins was pounced on by Will Evans to score an unconverted try.

A kick into the Gillingham half and good work by the forwards enabled flyhalf Ben Wiggins to scamper under the posts for a try which he converted himself.

10 minutes later he converted another penalty , after some  excellent forward pressure.

Although Gillingham had a good solid scrum and lineout they weren’t allowed to get any momentum, as Hitchin tackled ferociously.

A break on halfway by Carwyn Morgan was carried on by inter passing between half a dozen players, and was ended with Ben Wiggins going over under the posts, to make his own conversion easier.

A couple of penalties against Hitchin resulted in Gillingham forcing their way over the line but were held up, and then the ref blew his whistle for half time with the score 25 nil to Hitchin.

Now playing with the breeze, inside a minute of the second half Hitchin were on the score board again . Lock Jonathan Welsford caught the kick off and drove forward , the ball was recycled quickly and passed along the backs for Will Rooney to score, converted by Ben Wiggins.

Rooney scored again a few minutes later collecting a cross kick after a break out from defence.

A lineout 15 metres out from the Gillingham line resulted in James Bolter going over for a try converted by Ben Wiggins.

Will Evans collected a pass from captain Tom Tidey inside his own half and sprinted to outstrip the fence and score under the posts, Ben  Wiggins converted.

A kick down field with a good chase resulted in Gillingham being penalised for holding on, James Bolter took it quickly and went over the line for another unconverted try.

Hitchin continued with another unconverted try by Will Rooney and a converted one for Adam Shaw just before the final whistle.
