1st XV 60 v 8 Wasps FC - Home League on 16 Feb 2019

Published on Monday, 18 February 2019

Hedgehogs continued their winning ways , scoring 10 tries against Wasps at Old Hale Way

Wasps kicked off and Hitchin were soon attacking the Wasps line, but a penalty against Hitchin bought play back to the halfway line.

From a lineout 20 meters out from the Wasps line, Will Evans won the race to a touch down from a neat kick through by Ben Wiggins.  The conversion missed.

Ruiri Shanahan broke down the line . passed out of the tackle to Fred Rooney for an unconverted try.

Wasps came back with a penalty kicked for a lineout 5m from the Hitchin line; a scrum to Wasps and a further penalty against Hitchin came to nothing when Wasps dropped the ball and Hitchin were able to clear their lines.

A scrum option taken from a penalty against Wasps on their 5-meter line was pushed over for No 8 Ryan Arbon to score, converted by Ben Wiggins.

Scrum half Dan Wiggins made a side stepping break from the 22 to score a try converted by his brother Ben. Another try soon followed when Ryan Arbon made a break from half way passing to wing Will Rooney in support to score, converted by Ben Wiggins.

A penalty against Hitchin for a scrum offence brought play onto the Hitchin 22 and from the line out Wasps continued to pressure the Hitchin line forcing the defence to conceded a penalty for not rolling away which was duly kicked to bring the half time score to 31 – 3 in Hitchin’s favour.

Things did not improve for Wasps from receipt of the kick off, Adam Shaw came off his wing to intercept a pass and run in unopposed to score under the posts, converted by Ben Wiggins

A break from Will Rooney was kicked ahead and gathered by brother Fred to score wideout, which was unconverted.

This was repeated a few minutes later when prop Sean McGinnity noticed the space and distance to the try line put a neat kick through for wing Adam Shaw to score an unconverted try.

Wasps were by no means finished and made their way into the Hitchin 22 and managed to get round the defence to score in the corner.

Hitchin were awarded a penalty which they kicked for a lineout 30 m

from the Wasps line but the ball was lost.  However, Wasps were unable to clear their lines and Hitchin regained possession long enough for Jon Whitby to cross the line for an unconverted try.

Hitchin’s last try came when centre Carwyn Morgan broke through and offloaded in the tackle to Pierre De Rancourt, who scored and Ben Wiggins converted.

A fine team performance with forwards and backs combining effectively.
