Hitchin U8s v Biggleswade Match Report 1/3/15: U8s Continue Winning Ways!

Game 1
- Hitchin Antelopes 8-1 Biggleswade
Biggleswade were harried from the start by a dominant Hitchin team and after several 7 tag turnovers, the hedgehogs went into half time 4 tries up with no reply from Biggleswade largely down to excellent defensive work by Eden and Alfie and some great running by Harry, Noah and Luke.

The second half saw much of the same from Hitchin and some great tries from Lucas and Eden particularly. Biggleswade got themselves on the score sheet after some good running but it was s comprehensive win.

Game 2- Hitchin Dragons 8-7 Biggleswade

Hitchin opened up the morning with a terrific performance in a close-run contest. The first-half saw Jamie Timms showing his running ability, scoring a hat-trick of tries for the Hedgehogs. The first was a run in from distance, the second a result of some good support play to go over from close range and the third thanks to a brilliant jinking break from young Charlie. After the break, it was Jamie again, who opened the scoring, dotting down in the corner after some hot-stepping by Osian. In a tit-for-tat game, with Biggleswade having their share of potent runners, it then Gabe’s turn up the pressure by scoring a try from a few metres after some intuitive interlinking play by the Dragons. Osian was next on the scoresheet following up after more incisive running from Jamie. Osian and Gabe finished the game by again crossing the whitewash as the Dragons narrowly edged the game.

Game 3
- Hitchin Dragons 5-3 Biggleswade

Simon took the whistle for this game and it was a real team effort. Ewan showed purpose from the off with some incisive running but Tristan was the first to dot down for a score. In blustery conditions, Hitchin kept the ball tight and it was TJ who was next over the line with some clever footwork. Another to catch the eye was Harry who ran hard at the Bigglewade defence, allowing TJ to streak in in the corner. Next to showcase his skills was Joseph, who scored from a close distance and he was followed Kieran Worbey who showed good evasion skills by backpedalling adroitly to step a Biggleswade defender. Tristan again showed powerful running and strong support play to finish the scoring and a well deserved win.

Game 4
- Hitchin Antelopes 9-6 Biggleswade

A much tighter game this time with a stronger Biggleswade team who tested and breached our defence quite regularly with fine running and support work. The Antelopes were up for the challenge though and recovered their defensive aggression in the second half to force turnovers and made Biggleswade pay with excellent running and offloads to take the game by a narrow margin with tries from Eden, Harry and Lucas proving decisive. Overall a great performance by the Antelopes although we need to keep working harder to stay on side and to keep a strong defensive line for the whole game. A mention for Henry also who played his first game for Hitchin too and who made some good runs.

POTMLucas Summers-Pritchard for great effort and evasion play.

Game 5-Hitchin Dragons 9-1 Biggleswade
The Dragons final game of the day was another powerful performance. The livewire Jamie started the scoring after keeping up with outside-centre in the making, Conor Hamilton, who’d made a brilliant linebreak. With Osian and the rest of the team’s pressing Biggleswade into mistakes by not allowing them to settle, it was Leo who next took advantage after a handling error from the visitors. Gabe, wearing a distinctive bobble hat, showed a nose for the try-line, breaking away from distance and sprinting down the touchline to streak in. It was Jamie again who scored next again profiting from good support play as Hitchin started scoring at will, after Charlie showed the visitors a clean pair of heels. Next up was Leo, who showed his pace to touch down after some lovely jinking running and then Conor, who broke away to score after Biggleswade handling error. There were to be further scores from Nicola, who showed good determination to power in from distance and the irrepressible Lucy who jinked over from long-range. It was a superb performance to finish the morning. Well done.

POTM: Jamie Timms – Scored some fine individual tries but what really deserved plaudits was his ability to stay on the shoulder of the runner, where he picked up a hat-trick of tries

Game 6-Hitchin Bisons 9 - 2 Biggleswade

A warm up match against Simon's Cheetahs meant that when the game actually started against Biggleswade we hit the ground running. Scoring 5 tries in the first half and Biggleswade never really causing our line any real problems both our defence and attack was impressive. Numerous 7 tag turnovers and clinical finishing meant the game was pretty match over at half time with the score at 5-0 to Hitchin.

Second half was more disjointed with Biggleswade players leaving the pitch so we had to keep adjusting the number of players. Took our feet off the peddle after the break allowing Biggleswade to score two consolation tries but result never in doubt - the game finishing 9-2. Good all round display, some great tries and support play with everyone contributing.

Mention to Callum in his first game who did some great tagging. Hard to single out POTM - great tries by Adam, Fenton and Curtis amongst others but vote for POTM goes to Luca for all round game.
